Who says vegans have to miss out on bacon? Well ok, you have to miss out on the cruelty that’s involved with producing bacon, but you can still have the flavour! This recipe was given to me by my uni pal Rebecca, who was generous enough to post me a bottle of liquid smoke when I couldn’t find it in any nearby shops. She wanted a mention in my blog, so here it is 🙂 Apparently you can get liquid smoke in Asian stores, so give them a try. You don’t need much in this recipe, so a bottle will last a long time.
I made the tempacon as part of a breakfast cook-up, along with Slippery Jack mushrooms that my hubby foraged that morning, tomatoes with basil, and toasted homemade bread. What a great way to start the day! Leftovers (if there are any) are also great on a sandwich. See my next recipe Coconut Bacon for a ‘Bacon Bits’ substitute that’s great in salads or on wraps.
- 1 pack tempeh
- 1 tbs + 3 tsp tamari
- 2½ tsp mirin
- ½ tsp liquid smoke
- Thinly slice and pan-fry the tempeh until crispy.
- Add the remaining liquid ingredients, ensuring even coverage of the tempeh slices.
- That’s it!
